The name of the new branch library at the corner of Alum Rock Avenue and White Road will be decided at a meeting of the San Jose City Council on Tuesday, April 19th at 7:00 PM. Several names have been suggested including “The Dr. B. Roberto Cruz Library” (for the late founder of National Hispanic University), “La Pala Rancheria Branch Library” (to commemorate the history of the area), “The Ernesto Galarza Branch Library” (for a bi-lingual education pioneer with local roots), “The Alum Rock Branch Library” or a combination of the latter and Dr. Cruz’ name.
The San Jose Library Commission has recommended the name “The Alum Rock Branch Library,” to the Council, but their recommendation will just be one of many. District Five Councilmember, Nora Campos, is said to favor a name which incorporates Alum Rock and Roberto Cruz’ name.
Anyone interested in proposing yet another name or seconding one of the above may speak at the meeting and state their preference.
