Dear Supervisor _______________
Please do not cut the University of California Cooperative Extension Programs in Santa Clara County. They bring millions of dollars into the county through federal funding, university funding, grants and donated volunteer hours.
The proposed cuts would reduce the quality of life of residents of Santa Clara County who benefit from the volunteer efforts of the Master Gardener Program and the 4-H volunteers. In addition, the county would lose the benefit of the research, education and outreach of the Food and Nutrition Education Program serving low-income residents and the Natural Resources/Livestock Advisor and the Farm advisory programs serving our agricultural community.
(Personalize your letter by citing any particular services or benefits you have received or of which you are aware, and how they also benefit the county, such as the items below):
• Our Master Gardener hotlines in San Jose and Palo Alto which provide unbiased research based garden advice and plant problem diagnosis
• The Master Gardener volunteer training program (if you've gone through it and feel you've benefited and why)
• Our year round adult education classes at Campbell Community Center for people who work during the day
• Our urban gardening research which we publish in local newspapers, on our www.mastergardeners.org website (check it out!), and distribute from our office and at all the events at which we participate.
• Help with school gardens throughout the county
• Garden talks by Master Gardeners to community groups
• Up-to-date research based garden publications on dozens of topics (many of which are available on our website) specifically for Santa Clara County
• Tomato and other vegetable tastings to help folks determine varieties they'd like to grow in their own gardens
• Introduction of new or heirloom varieties of fruits and vegetables for our County
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
